2020 's major events made this year like no other. But regardless of how good or bad a year can be, Apple has always announced a list of the year's best apps. Although the 'best apps of the year' used to focus on iPhone, now the list has also covered the apps for Apple TV, Apple Watch, iPad, and Mac, including anything from a regular app to streaming entertainment or game.

On the 1st of December, Apple a nnounced its 15 'best apps' of the year. Some are not that surprising for making it to the list. For example, Zoom made it to the list as the iPad app of the year. Besides UX and design, Apple's 15 'best apps' for 2020 were chosen based on their technical innovation, cultural impact and of course their fast adaptation that helped us get through all the disruptions that have made 2020 a challenge.

Apps are a reflection of culture, and in 2020, developers overwhelmingly led a trend towards helpfulness. Around the world, app developers channeled their creative energy into helping users stay healthy, educated, connected, and entertained. — Apple's update

Without further ado, let's take a look at these apps and see what made them outstanding:

Zoom, best app of 2020 for iPad

Win: Simple user journey, A 3-click journey

Zoom provides a simple 3-click journey. If you look at the common path, there aren't many steps, and the primary actions are clear and simple in three simple steps to join a meeting:

  1. Join a meeting,
  2. Entering the password or meeting room number if needed,
  3. And then, input your name.

Caribu available on iPhone and iPad: App trend of the year

Win: Enhancing the online meeting experience for children and their parents or relatives, at a time that families need this the most!

For families seeking to connect with loved ones, Caribu added dozens of interactive games and more than a thousand new books to its real-time video-calling platform. — Apple

I wasn't surprised that Caribu made it to the list of best apps of 2020. As a UX Researcher and most importantly caregiver to my 4 years old nephew, before Caribu I had to use Facetime and hold a huge book to tell a story to my nephew. That was not a good experience at all.

It is amazing how I am now able to do a videocall while sharing the same screen and reading from one of the many digital books to him. Some of the books even offer a joint drawing function which my nephew loves — as long as I draw.

"It's almost like making babysitting virtual". — Maxeme Tuchman, CEO of Caribu

Shine available on iPhone and Apple Watch: App trend of the year

Win: Great use of colors and the quick adaptation to the challenges of 2020, be it the pandemic or the Black Lives Matters movement.

"Simple soft shapes and psychology behind colors are the key in Shine. They help us unconsciously associate each pattern with emotion or mood." — Iryna Korshak, Illustrator

To encourage users to get their mental health more seriously at the time of pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement, Shine launched a section specifically dedicated to the intersectionality of mental health and Black lives.

As Naomi Hirabayashi, Lidey's cofounder and -CEO at Shine says, the content of the app aimed at promoting not only mental health but also BLM-related content to promote the understanding of the issues for the non-Black Americans.

ShareTheMeal available on iPhone and iPad: App trend of the year

Win: Promoting a significant noble cause at the time of crisis.

"The United Nations World Food Programme's ShareTheMeal app made it easy for users to make a difference in the lives of others, with more than 87 million meals shared to date" — Apple

"For the U.N.'s World Food Program — the winner of this year's Nobel Peace Prize — the COVID-19 pandemic was another crisis on top of the existing ones that already cause food insecurity around the world. ShareTheMeal aims to make donating an effortless — and therefore irresistible — process.

"According to Max Costa, who leads the team responsible for the app in Berlin, the pandemic has highlighted the WFP's importance rather than leaving people too distracted to give to others less fortunate than themselves." — Fast Company

Wakeout!, best app of 2020 forfor iPhone

Win : making exercise from home available for everyone, specially for those not comfortable with the idea of exercise!

What makes Wakeout! different from other apps is that it includes more than 1,000 exercises that are suitable for everyone, even those who are too busy or those not that comfortable with the idea of exercising. On top of that the app also notifies the user when they are sitting too long. The app includes short and easy to follow exercises to prevent users from getting too sedentary during the pandemic.

Fantastical, best app of 2020 for macOS

Win: Providing the competitive advantage of unified dashboard and visualization of schedule, something that is is missing Apple's Calendar, Reminders and other calendar apps for macOS.

This app has brought advanced features for synchronizing everything between different devices and managing meetings, tasks. Besides its unified dashboard and visualization of schedule it also has features like Zoom integration and dark mode and weather forecasts to make it easier for users plan their activities.

As you can see below, there's also a new feature called "Interesting Calendars" which lets you add different calendars:

Disney+, best app of 2020 for Apple TV

Win: Perfect timing and affordable price of $7/month

Disney+ was released on November 2019, and it's still improving its UX and UI, but it couldn't have come at a better time. Also, when compared to other platforms, it's more affordable.

A comparison of different streaming platforms and their monthly subscription price.

Explain Everything Whiteboard available on iPhone and iPad: App trend of the year

Win: Ease of use for users of all ages, specially for students (young users), and teachers (senior users)

The fact that students don't have to worry about changing file formats, gives the app a competitive advantage in comparison with other apps in the market. Its tools are simple to use and its cloud-based collaboration allows groups of students continue to work on projects together remotely.

For teachers, the app allows users to easily flip classroom, providing templates for the types of lessons they likely teach most often. Pre-loaded templates are easy to use because they can be simply drag-dropped and modified.

Endel, best app of 2020 for Apple Watch

Win: Using science to make a difference at a time when we need to take of our mental hygiene the most.

Endel is a science-backed app that recommends sound scapes considering your the weather, your circadian rhythm, and of course your current activity. Here's what Endel is tracking to provide personalized experience:

  • Your current activity
  • The time of day
  • Your heart rate (measured via Apple iWatch)
  • The weather
  • And more… .

Endel claims its involvement with concentration and flow state — being fully immersed with an activity.

Best games of the year

2020 is a special year because due to the "pandemic boredom", people who do not normally play video games began playing on their devices. In fact video gaming even increased this year.

Pokémon GO: App trend of the year

Wins: Reinventing their outdoor gameplay with at-home exercises + gamification of exercise and social activities

  • Exercise: you can track your steps indoor while doing activities like running on a treadmill count toward game achievements.
  • Social activities: enhancing the in-game virtual social features to enable players to stay in touch when they can't meet in real life.

"When the COVID-19 pandemic hit earlier this year, Niantic was quick to react and modify Pokémon Go so people would still be able to play as much as possible without having to go outside. The changes were extremely well received, with the game's revenue spiking at the end of March and even seeing its best week for 2020" — Game Industry

Legends of Runeterra for iPad

Wins: An overall clean UI with no lag + easy navivation

"It's really nice to be able to provide some form of entertainment to people while they're just waiting for this thing to be over." — Jeff Jew, executive producer of Legends of Runeterra.

"When the pandemic hit, Riot Games was already at work on Legends of Runeterra … And it turned out that people stuck at home were eager to discover new games such as Runeterra — which, since its cards are virtual, isn't faced with the same coronavirus-era challenges as an in-person game like Magic: The Gathering in its traditional dead-tree form." — Fast Company

Sneaky Sasquatch : Apple Arcade Game of the year

Wins: Providing light and good-feel player's experience, the feeling of freedom and escapism when the players need it the most.

In a collection of incredibly fun games, this one stands out to become the Apple Arcade Game of the Year. The subtle, silly visuals, marvelous music, and brilliant gameplay make it a must-play experience. — Apple

RAC7 Games co-founder Jesse Ringros told Complex Canada:

"You can't really have a normal life, but we've built this normal life that the Sasquatch can live. So there's a lot of escapism with that. It is the right game at the right time, I think."

"The game's popularity really started to hit a peak right around the pandemic. The game provides a cartoon escapism with low-key, low-stress gameplay. It's just this very cozy environment. There's no explicit objectives that you have to do. You can go and cause mischief or explore, or just do whatever you want to do.."

Dandara: Trials of Fear for Apple TV

Win: Similarity of its story to the current world's situation

"Dandara's story feels weirdly relevant to the current climate. At its core, the tale focuses on isolation and the effects it can have on society. The game doesn't spend a lot of time developing its story; you won't find lengthy cut scenes or gobs of exposition. Instead, you'll piece things together through diaries and notes scattered around the world. You'll have to go out of your way to find some of them, but if you crave narrative, they're worth seeking out." — Switch Player

Disco Elysium for MacOS

Win: Innovation in RPG games, providing users with engaging reading experience!

Yes, you read that right, this game provides an engaging reading experience for players!

"Disco Elysium isn't your traditional RPG, in fact it's quite the opposite; There is no combat, you don't have incredible super powers, and there is more reading involved in Disco Elysium than the complete works of Shakespeare. Rather, Disco Elysium is all about attention to detail, thinking about your actions, and thinking outside of the box, essentially it is a detective RPG" — A review by Mef Tech
